Thanks for these thoughts! My husband and I are trying to honor God in this area, and it is not easy! It reminds me of the similar admonition not to use "emotionalism" when disciplining our children.

We have four ages four and under, and it is an ever-growing challenge to obey Colossians 3 and keep Christ's kingdom first when we are swimming upstream in the American materialistic culture. Every New Year we look around and feel overwhelmed at how much stuff we have and try to eliminate. Our big thing is we want our kids to appreciate gifts! I think it will be a challenge because it is taken for granted at Christmas, and I think so many of us have grown up expecting the blessings and not really appreciating them.

It's a challenge for sure, and I pray that we would have grace and wisdom as young parents!

Thank you for a very concise post. I tend to think of too many "points" and possibly miss the big picture. Do you have a post coming about how to "receive" gifts? How do we prepare our children to receive gifts, etc.

Jay Younts

Thanks, Dan. I actually had not planned to do a post on receiving gifts. But it does seem rather obvious that one is needed! Thanks for pointing out a blind spot to your humble blogger. You can expect a post by tomorrow.

I have to second everything Kristi wrote. We have two (soon to be three) kids 4 and under, and they're the only grandchildren on both sides of the family. So I often wonder how to keep the real reason for Christmas front and center without it being swallowed up by piles of gifts and greed, materialism, etc.
Thanks for this series of posts!

Great post...I just now got to read this. I'm going to include some of these ideas in my parents' newsletter for December at church. Thanks! (I'll be sure to reference you of course.)
